What to Expect When Buying a Domain Name When registering a domain name, please remember that it's important to have access to or the address of two of the name servers. These are the machines that translate your new domain name to the IP number underneath. This information should be readily available from your website host, as it is generally included in the cost of the plan. Beware of hosts that charge an extra fee for this. While it used to be fairly common practice for applicants to put false contact information on their application or even to leave the spaces blank, most registrars are now cracking down on this. It would be best for you to put the correct information when filling out these forms. The e-mail that you use to purchase your domain name will generally be your key to making any changes to the name or selling it to a third party. It is therefore a good idea to use an e-mail that is stable, i.e. one that you won't have to worry about the provider going out of business and leaving you high and dry. Purchasing a domain name used to be very simple. For a long time, the only registrar available to the public was Network Solutions. Domain names cost $50 a year (though it was later dropped to $35 a year) and had to be registered for a minimum of two years. Now you can find domain names priced as low as $6.50 a year! While some of the more established registrars still charge the higher fees, the registration is the same--the additional services offer by the registrar are really the only thing that will differ.
