How to Choose a Domain Name
When you set up a website, especially if it is one you are creating for your business, it's important to put some serious thought into the domain name that you choose. After all, it is often the first impression that a potential customer has of you. Here are some tips to keep in mind when selecting a domain name for your next website.
- If possible, choose a domain name that is the same as your company name. Although this might seem like common sense, there are plenty of website owners who don't do this. Many people feel that generic names such as computers.com are more desirable--indeed, many of these have very high resale prices. However, if your domain name and company name are the same, it will be much easier for customers to remember your website address.
- Consider the length that you would like for your domain name. Many short names are no longer available, but there's no need to use the full 67 characters for your name either. The best route is to choose a name that is meaningful (and thus memorable) while still being as short as possible.
- If the domain name you want is currently taken, you might consider adding hyphens between multiple words, adding "the" to the front, or pluralizing it.
- While .com is the preferable extension for most people, there are plenty who find that .net and .org are also perfectly acceptable, as are local country extensions. The important thing to remember is to always reference the full domain name with the extension if it is something other than .com, so your target audience will be able to find you.
